Dental Implant Options for Multiple Missing Teeth [Cosmetic Dentistry]

In cosmetic dentistry, many dentists believe that dental implants are the best and most long-term solution to multiple missing teeth. However, not all dental implants are the same, and it is helpful to understand the different options available to patients who are missing more than one natural tooth.

Replacing teeth with dental implants

The form of dental implant treatment depends largely on the number of teeth that are missing, and the replacement options include implant-supported crowns, bridges and dentures. The following is an overview of the dental implant options available to patients with more than one missing tooth.

Dental implant crown

Of course, if there is only one missing tooth the cosmetic dentist is likely to recommend a dental implant crown. However, a dental implant crown may also be an option if there are two or three missing teeth, especially if the teeth are not next to each other and are in different areas of the mouth. In this instance, the cosmetic dentist might recommend two (or possibly more) separate implant-supported crowns to replace each missing tooth.

Implant-supported bridge

A traditional dental bridge is one or more dental implants attached together to replace a missing tooth or small section of missing teeth. Whereas a fixed bridge attaches to healthy adjacent teeth in the patient’s mouth, an implant-supported bridge attaches to dental implants instead. There are several benefits to implant-supported bridges rather than fixed bridges, such as being less dependent on the health of the adjacent teeth. Implant-supported bridges are most ideal for patients who are missing several teeth in the same section of the mouth.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures are a great option for patients who are missing a large section of teeth or perhaps even an entire row of missing teeth. Implant-supported dentures are exactly what it sounds like, which are dentures that are supported by dental implants. Traditional dentures rest upon and are supported by the gums, whereas implant-supported dentures provide a much stronger hold and are often far more comfortable. Also, traditional dentures have a tendency to need more repairs and more at-home care than dentures that are supported by dental implants.

Full arch replacement

Full arch replacement is similar to implant-supported dentures, but it refers specifically to instances where every tooth on the upper or lower row of teeth (or both rows) needs replacement. Full arch replacement involves the strategic placement of four dental implants, which serve as the root of the dentures, rather than the dentures being supported by the gums alone. Many cosmetic dentists recommend full arch replacement as the most convenient and long-term solution to patients who experience severe tooth loss or damage.
