Remedies for Relief From a Toothache

If you have a toothache, you probably want something that relieves it quickly, without requiring major dental treatment. Fortunately, remedies are readily available for toothaches. The source of the pain varies from patient to patient: It could be from a cavity, a broken tooth, an infection, or a sinus problem.

Remedies for a toothache

To determine what type of treatment is required for a toothache, it is advisable to consult with the dentist by scheduling an appointment. They will perform an exam on the tooth and treat the pain in the process. Delaying treatment for a toothache can increase the probability of an extraction. Although it is important to get dental care quickly, here are a few ways to deal with the discomfort before the dental appointment:

Cold compress: Placing an ice pack or ice cubes wrapped with a towel over the cheek when dealing with a toothache helps relieve pain and reduces swelling and inflammation. Patients are supposed to use cold compresses for temporary relief, so it is worth trying when they cannot sleep at night. However, if it is a more complicated issue like a root canal, the pain may not improve until they visit the dentist.

Clove oil: Clove oil can provide relief for toothaches. The best way to apply clove oil is to gently and sparingly use a cotton ball as a compress on the painful or tender teeth and gum tissue to achieve effective results. Clove oil is a natural essential oil with analgesic properties to alleviate pain. While diluted clove oil is an effective temporary remedy, it does not have a pleasing flavor.

Saltwater rinse: A rinse with saltwater can help relieve sore or tender gums. Patients can put a pinch of salt into a cup of warm water and swirl it around in their mouth for a few seconds before spitting it out. The water should not be hot,m as it may worsen the pain.

Over-the-counter meds: Drugs that can be obtained at the local pharmacy, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help relieve tooth pain. These pain meds will provide short-term relief until the dentist’s visit.

Dental remedies for a toothache

Exposed nerves in a tooth due to tooth decay may lead to severe pain and can be handled with a dental filling. To restore the tooth, the dentist will drill out any decay that remains and cover the tooth with filling material, like composite resin.

A tooth abscess may result from an infection of the tooth’s pulp chamber. If the tooth is abscessed, the dentist will recommend root canal therapy, not extraction. During the procedure, the dentist will clean the inside cavity to remove the infection, drain the abscess, and then place a dental crown on the tooth to protect the integrity of the natural structure.

In conclusion

If a tooth is severely damaged or broken, the best option for pain relief might be to extract the tooth. Even if you can get temporary relief from the pain, visit a dentist to have your teeth checked.
