Tooth pain is one of those things that most people have to deal with at some point in their lives. Think of it was a warning signal that there is something wrong in the mouth. The more intense the pain is, the more serious the underlying issue causing it is.
Managing tooth pain
The only permanent fix for tooth pain is figuring out the cause and addressing it. Dentists can figure out the cause of a patient's toothache by doing a visual examination, probing it or using diagnostic tools like X-rays. The dentist can then perform any necessary treatments and bring the patient's tooth pain to an end.
However, people do not always have quick access to dental services, so they might have to manage the pain on their own for a few days while they wait to see a dentist. Here are proven and tested remedies that can help reduce the pain caused by an aching tooth.
1. Saltwater rinse
The ingredients for tooth pain can be found in almost every home. It can help reduce minor discomfort and irritation. Salt is one of nature's disinfectants and can loosen debris stuck in a damaged tooth.
Simply mix half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water, and swish it around the mouth as if it were mouthwash. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used similarly.
2. Icepack
An icepack can be used to relieve toothaches, particularly when they are caused by trauma. The cold temperature leads to blood vessels in the area constricting, reducing the intensity of any pain being experienced. Ice should be applied to the cheek area that the pain is coming from and kept there for 20 minutes at the most, before an equally long break.
3. Peppermint tea bags
These are especially effective for pain caused by sensitive gums. It is best to use a used teabag that is still warm. Apply the bag to the area that the pain is coming from for a few minutes before removing it. The teabag can also be used as a cold compress. Simply place it in the freezer for a few minutes to cool it, then apply it directly to the tooth.
4. Clove oil
This is one of the most effective ways to alleviate toothaches, and it is the active ingredient in many manufactured toothache products. To use this remedy, crush a clove until it turns into a paste and spread it on the affected tooth. Be careful not to get the paste on soft tissues like the gums, since it can irritate them.
